MILEY CYRUS: change starts from the hair

Scritto da Damiano Crosina 13 June 2017
Coco Chanel once said that “A woman who cuts her hair is about to change her life” and Miley Cyrus is perhaps the most emblematic demonstration of how a different haircut can change your personality. For Miley it has been true since her origins, from the time of Hanna Montana. Without the blonde wig a normal little girl, with the wig a pop star idol of the teenagers. It has been like that for years, then everything canged: a net cut with the character Disney forced her to be and a sharp cut of the long hair that had defined her first youth. Bye bye brown waves, welcome blonde oxygenated short hair. And then the twerking, the super sexy costumes and the movements at the limit of decency.

At the time it got us worried: the sweet country girl we were used to know had suddenly grown up, now she was smocking weed and shacking her ass on live TV. After the (in)famous performance at the 2013 VMAs we thought she had gone crazy. Miley’s innocent smiles had been replaced by out-sticking of her tongue and ammers licking. She must have some problems, we thought, she is definetly not ok. Like a wreacking ball (pun intended) Cyrus destroyed piece by piece the character of good girl who had been built around her and inside of which she felt trapped.

Brave, brazen and incisive, his haircut was the symbol of her most eccentric and controversial phase. But now things are changing, again. It was teased by an interview with Billboard and today It’s confermed by the release of her new single. Malibu, it’s called. The new Miley Cyrus is here and we could not be happier.

And once again the change starts from the hair: long to the back, free, unstylized and almost wild. Natural color has taken over the remains of the platinum blonde, the legacy of the “old” Miley. Needless to say, the song is beautiful. “Now I’m free as birds catching the wind,” sings Miley, “is a new beginning.” We see her smiling, dancing in a funny way, running on the beach and we can not help but be joyful for her. The new Miley is happy, carefree and much mature.
“I never would’ve believed you if three years ago you told me I’d be writing this song” she sang in a passage of the song and we could not agree more. Miley grew up and once again she surprised us. The decision to leave the platinum blonde on the tips, in sharp contrast to the dark brown re-growth made me think. I like to think it’s a way of telling us that she does not deny her past, a way to say: that was also me, I had my wild times, my disordered period, drugs and allusions too explicit, I don’t want to pretend it didn’t happened because I needed it: it helped me to better understand who I was; Now I grew up, now I moved on, now I feel good in my skin.

It’s strange how many things a haircut can say, don’t you think? A haircut can totally redefine us. So, next time you go to the hairdresser, don’t choose your next haircut based on how you would look better, but rather based on what kind of person you want to become. Believe it or not, a haircut can do this and more.
